Bit put by? : Mon Nov 09, 2015 8:11 am
Some people seem in intent on spending every penny the club has assembling a team for 2016 - am I the only one who thinks this is a bit short sighted mistake.

If by some chance we have put together a good team that we can build on then we will be in big bother if we wish to do so. It's always been a problem for us in the past so we should know better.

We currently have a number of potentially good players on 1 year deal. I understand these from the perspective of both parties. However if any of these players turn really good then we need to be in a position to extend their contracts before the predators and parasites get wind.

I know this will sound mercenary but - young players should be fairly easy. I'd have thought Smith will know fairly soon whether players like Shulver, Anakin and Crowther (sorry big lads mate, but club first for me) are players he thinks should be around at the club for years to come. So best offer them an extension and modest pay rise ASAP before they or their agent or Shudds realises how good they are  . Harsh but that's how other teams do it.

Players like Morris and especially Arona who are here to shop window themselves are a bit harder, but if we want them we need to be in as quick as we can before we are dragged into a bidding war with bigger clubs that we can't win.

So for the long term we need to keep some of our powder dry - ditto we don't know if we have signed more duffs and will need to do the great escape again.

So TBH I really hope we do have some spare cash stashed away. Just a thought FWIW.

I go along with those thoughts to me its common sense to have some spare cash around you never know what might happen. Arona might have only signed for a year to see if he settles he is mates with Topou who has signed for 2 if he decides early doors "I like this" we then have the chance to negotiate. We have to make sure any quality youngster stays at the club. You never know if a player becomes available and he would be a quality fit within the team you have the money to get them.
Its a no brainer for me and spot on

It would be nice to think that there's a strategy at work here - and with BS' years in the game, I'm sure he's familiar with the machinations of agents and the potential for players to be lured away by the bright lights of a bigger club, and all that comes with it; facilities, wages, benefits and the chance of winning something.

That said, I imagine that WTW is quite a difficult sell to a player with ambition; sometimes, a 1 year deal might the best we can do in terms of getting them through the door - I would agree however that after a period of evaluation, extensions should be offered to those players who are either good enough to want to keep, or good enough that a bigger club might come knocking; that way, if they do choose to leave, the club can (very reasonably) monetise the time remaining on their contract. That can even be done with the consent of the player - which I'm certain happens all the time at clubs with more bargaining power.

As I said, given Smith's years in the game, I'd be very surprised if he's not already thinking like that.

I'm sure he is, I was more pointing out to the some of the less patient fans that there are good reasons why you don't spend it all at once - as they say the season is a marathon not a sprint and building great teams takes years not month. :D

Most fans are the same and they would spend every penny chasing the dream.
Of course, its important that the Chairman is a bit more sensible than the average fan, although this hasn't always been the case at Wakefield.

I couldn't agree more; although I guess that MC's Osborne-esque austerity measures thus far have given some indication that despite the vocal objections of some fans, he won't spend what he hasn't got.

On balance, despite the excitement that Glover was sometimes able to generate, I'd be happy to avoid any more boom and bust.

For a change Vastman makes a reasonably point, one area I would like us to retain some finance for would be to employ an understudy for Brian Smith. We have Smith for a season, I do not imagine that the club will want any of our existing assistants to take over as head coach for 2017. We need an heir to Brian Smith, someone who will learn from him this coming season. I think that for Stuart Dickins and Gilmore this opportunity will come to early. I would hope that Brian Smith may have someone in mind and that the club could be in a position to employ them as Brian`s assistant for the 2016 season.
