Paul Carter : Mon Dec 15, 2014 4:46 am
The second row or hooker has just been released from the Titans after his second drink driving offence last night.

He played 21 games of firstgrade last year - many with Kelly and Blair.
He is a Wyong Roos junior, and his father is Wyong Roos and Penrith Legend Steve Carter - so he would know Josh Mantellato.

Even with a British passport he still wouldn't, he'd need to have been playing over here before he was 21 as well.

Even if he did have a British, eu or Kolpak passport, if he didn't come through the system at a European federation club he shouldn't be an option. Exceptions have been made for players born in the UK though - Finnigan and the Hendersons iirc.
I think we're done with recruitment for now - Unless a fed-trained hooker becomes available and given the shortage of quality across the league, I won't be holding my breath.

Do you have an opinion on SL's non-federation rule Roopy? Put simply, each club can only have seven players who learned the game outside of Europe. It used to be five, but there were still a lot of players exempt, as they were here before the rule came in to effect.
I thought five was overly protectionist (or would have been if they'd held to it) but seven I'm okay with. I don't think it'll make that much difference to England's international prospects, as the issue is too big to be 'solved' with bits of fiddly rule-making. But, I do think it goes some way to maintaining an identity for the game here, stopping us becoming just 'NSW Cup-Europe' (no offence).

My opinion is that you should sign the best players you can, wherever they come from.
There is nothing stopping NRL clubs signing players from anywhere.
Melbourne have been 100% imports from other states and countries for most of their history, and it hasn't hurt them any.
I do think clubs should get concessions for juniors they produce though.

I quite agree. Better for him to sign for a club whose owner, for instance, has first hand experience of a drink driving conviction to enable them to pass on their first hand knowledge to him about the stupidity and selfishness for such an offence.
