'when my life is over, the thing which will have given me greatest pride is that I was first to plunge into the sea, swimming freely underwater without any connection to the terrestrial world'

Yves Le Prieur, the real inventor of the aqualung

Bruce Springsteen, seen him many times and he always produces the goods. In the early days he did over 5 hrs on stage, you really got your monies worth.

Other good ones were Van Halen in the early days (1978), also saw Queen that year in the States, absolutely brilliant.

Smaller bands who gave a good show were Hawkwind, Squeeze and Del Amitri.

Worst, ironically was Prince at the Sheffield Arena, took my daughter & boyfriend to see him and he did 50 minutes, total rip off.

Never done an original thing in their career. By their own admission they weren't in the top 5 bands in Manchester of their own generation.

Stone Roses
The Fall
New Order
Joy Division
The Smiths

It's stretching it a bit saying Joy Division were the same generation as Oasis!

If your going through Hell,..........Keep going!!! (Winston Churchill)

Best band: The Clash, 1978 Leeds Uni, The atmosphere and energy was unbelievable!!

Worst band: Bay City Rollers, Blackpool 1974, before they "made it" couldn't play their instruments and did 5 songs three times! Absolute rubbish BUT we were three males amongst hundreds of girls so it turned out to be a good night!! :-)

Red hot chilli peppers, Hyde park 2004, great performance all around from Kiedis making the whole set current and personal rather than just going through the tracks. The reference to the fathers for justice guy climbing Buckingham palace walls dressed as Batman by announcing "I've figured out a way to break in to Buckingham palace, I don't want to get anybody in to trouble but I kinda figured it out". Funny, at the time.

I was at this gig, it was, as you say a great performance.

I thought James Brown warming the crowd up was awesome too.

However the other warm up act "Chicks on Speed" were the worst band i've ever seen closely followed by Angels & Airwaves (a Blink 182 spinoff) - seen supporting The Foo Fighters at Old Trafford cricket ground.

Good thread this

Best – so many to choose from. Smashing Pumpkins at Leeds T&C 1993, Television at Glastonbury 2004, Love with Arthur Lee at Glastonbury in 2003. Saw Motorhead a lot in the late 80s and 90s they were always good.

Worst – Saw Crosby, Stills and Nash at Glastonbury a few years back, awful, they should have retired ages ago.

Hull kingston rovers.

For me The Who were different class created an unbelievable atmosphere, but smokie, the hollies, squeeze and a group I thought were excellent and never seem to get a mention was love affair, steve ellis great voice. The worst has to be the kinks, great songs but ray davies always seemed to be struggling with the higher notes.

Best I've seen were U2 (Achtung Baby Tour), Queen at Knebworth which was 1986 and the last ever Freddie Mercury live gig - Ironically I didn't want to go as I wasn't a big fan but accompanied my brother, Pink Floyd The Wall Earles Court- and another notable good one was the Stones 1995 gig at Sheffield.
Worst ones, Pink Floyd (Momentary Lapse Of Reason Tour). Neil Diamond, Elton John, who is now just a bad pub singer, both at the KC and probably topping, or bottoming rather, the lot was The Sex Pistols - truly awful despite the kudos they're given by many.

There is one name on here that I am surprised hasn't had a mention, bearing mind this is off the Hull KR thread.

The Beatuiful South. Seen these a couple of times, and have also seen 2 Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbot gigs. He has such a stage presence, and his rapport with the fans is amazing. Also pitch perfect every time they play.

Another under rated, but excellent live band, Deacon Blue, and still touring, later this year next tour.

Worst group T'Pau

Seen them a couple of times as well, they are Mrs Stans favs, all a bit MOR for my tastes, although they went down a storm at the (then) McAlpine when they supported the excellent REM in 1995.

Never really got the beautiful south. Saw them live in mainbrace and they were alright nothing more. Prefer my bands with a bit more to them.
