Catalans Dragons are increasingly looking like the 'real deal' in 2016 and they took a five game unbeaten run to Langtree Park. They were taking on a Saints side who are struggling to find form and consistency, but who were on a high after last weeks win over league leaders Warrington Wolves.
It was second against sixth and an unlikely sixty point win would see the Dragons top of the pile overnight. But in a close season where only six points cover the top nine sides, a sixty point win for the Saints would see them above the Dragons and into second spot.
It was the visitors who registered the first points when Jodie Broughton picked up a bounce pass from Todd Carney to come inside the last Saints defender and dive over the line. Pat Richards slid the conversion right of the uprights.
On thirteen Jack Ashworth piled the pressure on his side when he was penalised for holding down. The Dragons moved the ball right through fast hands for Broughton to go in unopposed for his second of the night. Pat Richards was on target from the touchline for 10-0.
After being forced into a goal-line dropout, the Dragons conceded Saints opener after an intricate passing move through half a dozen pairs of hands culminated in Theo Fages diving over the line. Luke Walsh added the conversion to cut the deficit to four points.
On thirty-two Broughton completed his hat-trick when he caught and juggled a Carney pass to evade the last Saints tackler and drop over the line. Richards again failed to add the extras from out wide leaving his side 14-6 ahead.
Two minutes from the interval and a great try from Luke Walsh, kicking forward and then collecting to dive over under the sticks and give himself a simple conversion for a 12-14 half time score which saw Saints right back in a game despite them having been second best for long periods.
The second half was six minutes old when the Dragons extended their lead after Glenn Stewart spun out of two tackles before feeding Richie Myler in plenty of space to go under the sticks. Richards added the extras and the Dragons lead was back to eight points.
Within two minutes the Dragons were in again, this time through Pat Richards, who took a pass from Justin Horo to go thirty-five metres down the let touchline and score in the corner. The veteran winger was unable to convert his own try but his side were 24-12 ahead and Saints had a struggle on their hands.
Broughton grabbed his fourth on sixty-three minutes when Gigot crabbed across the field before the Dragons winger was again in position to take the pass and cross unopposed. Richards again failed to goal but the game now looked beyond Saints.
A penalty for holding down on seventieth allowed Richards to make it 30-12 when he goaled from thirty-five metres and sealed a superb win which saw the Dragons level with top of the table Warrington Wolves.
Despite Saints getting themselves back into the game by half-time, the second half belonged to the Catalans Dragons. Laurent Frayssinous will be delighted that his side have made it six consecutive victories and will feel that his side are getting themselves into a position to launch a real bid for a Grand Final place.
