East End eateries : Wed Sep 05, 2012 1:04 pm
Just been down to that Bethnal Green institution, Bagel Bake in Brick Lane. Good value for filled bagels.

Anyone been to E Pellicci's? Quite fancy going there sometime - although it's a bit far to walk at lunchtime.

Can anyone recommend any other E1 and E2 eateries that are good value / interesting / traditional / quirky or whatever?

Freedom without Socialism is privilege and injustice.
Socialism without freedom is slavery and brutality.

It uses the spelling Beigel Bake and it would have been my recommendation.
Try Tayyab's ... walk down to the far end of Brick Lane from Beigel Bake, cross over Whitechapel High Street and it's in a back street parallel with Whitechapel High Street.
Well tasty, very cheap, very popular with the locals and a bit too brisk for lingering.

Fifteen years ago, I would have recommended Bloom's but you'd have to go up Golder's Green to enjoy Bloom's nowadays.

I use the English spelling.

Been to Tayyabs. Better than the Brick Lane Indian's I've been to - which have been poor.

Yes, I think Bloom's has gone. In fact it has and seems like the olders Green one has too:

Blimey, was it 1996 when they closed in Whitechapel ? ... my "fifteen years ago" was a couple of years out then.

If you pop into the Blind Beggar, be sure to say in a very loud voice "I see you've fixed the bullet hole in the ceiling" and the locals will all welcome you, smilingly, to their collective bosom.

Moo around the back of Petticoat Lane is very good, although it has gone from being filled with down to earth culturally aware bankers such as myself to coke fuelled bellends, so be warned.

Pilpel and the new pizza place that is a couple of doors down opposite Spitalfields market are both good, as are A Gold (amazing daily lunch time sandwiches) and the Vietnamese place that used to be S&M.

None of these top the green sauce of Assenheim's 56 on London Wall though - best thing about moving office to LW last week. :)
