So sad to hear this news. Being an LUFC fan I've been an admirer of Gary for many years. It's hard to imagine a place so dark no light can shine. RIP.

I don't think it's really fair to discuss the reason until its officially revealed.
He seemed so bright yesterday. Very strange but appallingly sad.

Anyone on my facebook knows my distain for the gutter press and this is typical how the papers have been getting away with this for far too long. hopefully there will be more paper get whacked sooner than later.

Either way, mental health issues, clearly anyone who says "he was ok yesterday on TV" doesn't understand depression, it's quite easy for a person to cover up this for years even amongst people close to them, even maybe they don't know they have it.

Maybe if the soccer community had a stateofmind like RL does he could have sought help, but alas with the way the papers are into everything unchecked and unpoliced I fear he felt cornered. (if the news story report is true).

Such a shame. I couldn't believe it when I heard this morning. I met him personally during his time at Everton when he coached me a few times and I went to an awards evening with him.

He seemed to doing so well professionally, he'd certainly improved Wales dramatically. If it is confirmed it was due to a press story being released it's shocking. I would never buy a daily newspaper and I really can't see why anyone would. Pure evil.

Can't believe considering he was only a relatively young 42 that it was a full 20 years ago that a young Speed and Batty appeared from virtually nowhere to add their youthful enthusiasm to Utd's midfield to help them lift the title.

terrible news.... apparently the press were about to release a damaging story about him.

If this is true, then this is another example of our press' "gobshitedness", and being obsessed with other people's lives.
IF (and it's a big if) Speed has commited an 'indiscression' , then, it has nothing to do with us. It's totally a family thing, and for them to deal with, not for some @@@@@@@ in an office to play judge and jury with somebody's life.

Again, if the press thing is true, OUR PRESS ARE TOTAL @@@@ers

A lot I agree with in this – although I would point out that the "state of mind" of the RL community didn't prevent Terry Newton taking his own life, so I don't think it's necessarily that simple.

It might be a news story if it was something criminal – before anyone comments, I'm not remotely suggesting he had done anything criminal, simply that that might provide a justification.

Now to emphasise – we don't know, as yet, why this happened, so this is largely speculation.

I would add, though, that not all the press behave so badly. It is largely a tabloid obsession. Not entirely, but largely.
