Funnily enough, I thought of this thread at the weekend while re-reading Raymond Chandler's Lady in the Lake.

Chandler has Marlowe commenting on the amount of people who meets who spit, including a mountain policeman who has a vast spittoon next to him in his office.

And all the characters who do spit are good ol' white boys.

I've been a bit of a phlegger in my day.
Don't bother as much these days but if I'm off for my morning paper and I've got a nose and mouth full of goz it's getting deposited somewhere externally in a discreet fashion.

Why not swallow it, its your mucous and its not going to harm you ?
