Amidst recent reports that Thatcher has agreed plans for her state funeral there is now an e-petition available for those who wish to sign requesting that taxpayers' money isn't wasted on such frivolity when it could be better used by putting people who have lost their jobs back into work. http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/2979 I don't seriously believe any government would attempt to canonise such a divisive character, however I wouldn't want to leave it to chance either.

If Futurama had been English i'm sure they'd have made a joke about how the problems of the year 3000 are all Thatchers fault.

Just put a 'Dance Dance Revolution' arcade machine on her grave. It'll pay for ten state funerals within a month.

In all seriousness though, I don't agree with a state funeral, but she was the first woman to ever become PM, so some fuss is to be expected.

IMO it would be a backwards step for the state to provide Mrs Thatcher's funeral, it will end up being inefficiently run, poor quality service and just result in jobs for the boys. They should sell off the rights to provide her funeral to private investors. I'm sure it could be run profitably, charge customers for the right to attend her funeral, sell the rights to televise it live to Pay TV or to internet channels for people that want to watch it live, get high profile speakers that will attract the crowds, there's no reason why opening it up to the market couldn't deliver a higher quality service and at no cost to the taxpayer. At the end of the day it doesn't matter to the customer whether provision comes from the state or the private sector it is about what quality that service is.
