Have you noticed the nature of other national anthems? They generally glory in the diversity and richness of the country in question. Compare that with ours which is entirely about one woman and doesn't mention anything at all about the actual UK. God save our gracious Queen, Long live our noble Queen, God save the Queen: Send her victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us: God save the Queen. O Lord, our God, arise, Scatter her enemies, And make them fall. Confound their politics, Frustrate their knavish tricks, On Thee our hopes we fix, God save us all. Thy choicest gifts in store, On her be pleased to pour; Long may she reign: May she defend our laws, And ever give us cause To sing with heart and voice God save the Queen. Now I personally feel uncomfortable, and frankly a bit daft, singing about one woman when what I want to do is sing about the multitude of aspects of the UK I love. Also there are references to "us". Perhaps, it's about more than the monarch, per se?
