Sad news. I watched a BBC 4 documentary on the development of Heavy Metal just the other night and Lord featured on it. Came across as an intelligent, decent bloke.
I wasn't as in to Purple as some of my contemporaries but I still had a few of their albums. The main riff from Smoke On The Water is also the only guitar riff I ever learned and one of three things I can pick out on a piano.
'when my life is over, the thing which will have given me greatest pride is that I was first to plunge into the sea, swimming freely underwater without any connection to the terrestrial world'
strange coincidence, I haven't listened to Purple in a lot of years and recently had a lot of vinyls put into digital and only yesterday listened to the live album Made in Japan in my car.
RIP Jon Lord
