But when I log in to Hotmail it uses my login name. My real name isn't used anywhere. I log into Outlook and it uses my real name, not my Hotmail login - it redirects all my hotmail post there, but there is no reason it should know my name.
Although its a bit bright for my liking, i do quite like it. Quickly updated my email and transferred everything over in a flash. Just need mail for mac to start supporting it now!

You've sat on that computer for so many hundreds of hours, caressed its keyboard, intimately stroked its mouse and pressed its buttons, and you think it doesn't know who you are?

Are you sure you didn't provide those details when you signed up for Hotmail? In the database that sits behind all this stuff the field where that information is stored is one of two essential fields that has to be filled in. It can be filled with garbage but it has to have something in it. We've been through two generations of student email hosted by MS now and it's only in the last year or two that that data is being displayed on screens when they log in, but I've been sending it to them since the year dot.
