Offshore Immigration Camps : Wed Nov 21, 2012 8:41 am
Australia have re-established their policy of offshore immigration centres.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-20422055

There are plenty of remote islands in the UK.

Is this something we should be looking at?

Would certainly stop people vanishing into society whilst their applications are being processed. And it would make it far easier to deport people should their applications fail.

All artists are willing to suffer for their art. So few are willing to
learn to draw.

Australian's are keeping their undesirables on an island offshore? It's a good argument for social cycle theory.

Some remote Scottish island. But make sure it's not one that the RAF might accidentally mistake for a bombing range ;-)

Take your pick:

And these people are housed where exactly, or do we just drop them there and leave them to fend for themselves?

Perhaps we could send ours to Australia's camps instead?

If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle.

Frederick Douglas

Last time we did that, this emerged.

Quifftastic!

On topic, why would we need immigration camps off shore? Successive government policy, and one that is being ramped up currently, is to reduce immigration, largely in response to foaming at the mouth editorials in the tabloid press, as opposed to any proper analysis. Asylum claims are pretty much static now, at around 24000 a year since 2009, compared to 49000+ in 2003 and 84000+ in 2002, so I'd say no, offshore detention camps aren't needed. Unnecessary expense for little benefit.

It reminds me of a 90's film called No Escape.

The island was a prison where inmates were thrown from a helicopter and left to fend for themselves and forge their own societies.

Basically what we did with Australia back in the olden days.
