Cracking actor. Said recently in an interview that it was the cigs that finally got him. He gave up 10 years or so ago but reckoned he'd smoked 1/2 a million over his life time.

much remembered for his sit com roles, but one of the best Shakesperian actors I ever had the privilege to see, and was incredibly fortunate to meet on two occasions, a true gentleman.

RIP Mr Briers, condolences to those left behind.

I saw him as Lear in King Lear (with Emma Thompson as the Fool and directed by Branagh) and as Malvolio in Twelfth Night.
Not all screen actors can hack it on stage but he could and very well too.

He'll be missed.

Derek Batey died as well. Far too young too, both of them. Still, age shall not weary them and all that.
