Walking Up Ingleborough With Dogs : Mon Apr 29, 2013 12:59 pm
Myself and a mate are planning on walking up Ingleborough in the next few weeks - does anybody know if any of the routes will be suitable for dogs or is there parts that could be too rugged or steep?

Any advice welcome

thanks

done it many times, I wouldn't say any of it is too steep etc. You need to keep them on a lead as it's the tail end of lambing season, other than that, you'll be fine.

There's a little scramble up some rocks near the NE corner of the summit plateau that could be a tiny bit problematic to a too-big or too-small dog.
My mate's Yorkie was carried over that bit.

Apart from that bit, none of it is too steep unless your dog's a right wimp.
Nonetheless, the routes from Clapham go close to Gaping Gill Hole, you wouldn't want your dog(s) running around near that !

If you encounter cows with calves (say on the lower slopes on the Ribblehead side of Ingleborough) they are very often spooked by dogs, on or off the lead, (and even dairy cows-with-calves can get dangerously defensive with dogs around!) so give them very wide avoidance.

Gaping Gill is awesome though, definitely something everyone should do before their lid gets closed!

Thanks for the replies, my dog is a staffordshire bull terrier so I keep him on a lead at all times regardless of location (other than my garden that is) so him worrying livestock or not having the stamina for it is not in question.

Will do a bit more reading up on it before deciding the actual route.

Even on a lead, make sure you go well clear around cows with calves, not through the middle of the group.
I speak from experience.

If you'd sussed that anyway, apologies.

have to agree, the only more defensive creature with young (other than women from East Hull who think their benefitt is in danger) are horses, them and cows are very, very unpredictable.

Of course, I know my dog and understand the breed so don't take any chances with him in public places with any species of animals - not like some of the idiots who are unfortunately attracted to the breed.

thanks again

Set of from Ingleton. Walk up to white scar cave. Then just keep following the path up.

There is one style on this route and if your dog cant manage it you should be able to lift him over.
