Buying A Pram : Sun Sep 08, 2013 3:58 pm
Just recovering from our first visit to a pram shop.

Has anybody got any prams that they would recommend?

We are looking for something that is a comfortable ride for baby but also easy to fold down and has the ability to have the baby facing towards you and also outwards.

Thanks
Dally

These used to be good:

http://www.silvercrossbaby.com/2013-collection/

They used to do an intermediate one with fold down base and carry cot for the body, rather than the full monty. It still gave a great, well sprung ride.

These days there are lots of trendy very expensive brands too.

Go to a car boot sale and buy a second hand one.

Spending money on a new pram is possibly one of the biggest wastes of money you can think off.. They tend to be nothing more than a status symbol.

Babies spend very little time in prams, they can sit / sleep in virtually anything.

They are much easier to manage in a papoose ( we used the baby bjorn which was excellent)

Agreed - but you can on the link I gave get ones that act as cots and pushchairs too. Not sure how effective the pushchair element is and whether it would be big enough for a toddler but if it is then could be cost-effective.

Re: Buying A Pram : Mon Sep 09, 2013 1:15 pm
We got the Mothercare Spin and thought it was excellent; relatively light and compact, feels very stable and corners well whilst pushing, folds easily with one hand whilst you're holding baby, you can turn it from front to rear facing without having to take anything apart or even take baby out, and the carry cot actually turns into the seat when they're ready so you're not left with a bulky carry cot to put in a cupboard somewhere. We went with a MaxiCosi car seat rather than the compatible Mothercare one, though.

If I had one tip about buying a pram, here it is: If you're after a travel system, pick your car seat first and get the pram to match that. I personally believe that getting the right/safest car seat is the most important thing (or at least gave us the most peace of mind), so it's better to get that right and see what prams will match than to pick your pram first and find your car seat options restricted.

Get the smallest/lightest/quickest folding thing you can, or be prepared to be plssed off for the next two years.

This.

Can I also add my two-pennoth of "proud new father" wisdom gained those twenty-odd years ago now - when your young-uns get to the age where they want to be carried everywhere, for gods sake buy something that allows you to carry them in a balanced way, something like a papoose mentioned earlier.

My mistake was to want to carry both of ours around various supermarkets in one arm in that classic stance where you park their bum on one hip so that you've got one arm free - big mistake as it twists your spine in the opposite direction and you end up over a 12 month period with a crushed disc at the base of your spine, ten weeks recovery by not being able to move at all and then years worth of back problems and a dead spot in one of your legs from nerves that were shot.

Apart from that - enjoy your little sprog and savour every minute, they grow up far too quickly and the next twenty years will fly by.

I know the chap well, who used to do the pinstriping on the Silvercross prams when the factory was in Guiseley.

The quality back then was superb. I've still got the Silvercross pram that I was pushed around in all those years ago. Whether they are still as good today I couldn't say.

I'd also seriously consider not getting a carry cot (to clip onto pram). We paid over £100 for ours and it was literally used on the pram twice. Their absolutely fine sleeping in a car seat then going to a sitting position, really no need for them unless they'll spend really long times in pram.

Plenty of very good second hand prams, car seats on Gumtree.
