It is no different for a rugby club.

It is massively different in this case. At the start of the season the club will not have budgeted for a 5th round tie at home in the Challenge Cup. It would be financial suicide to have done as such. So the income from the match would have been a bonus income to the financial forecast.

Maybe so, but I'd be very surprised if Halifax hadn't budgeted to reach the knock out stages of the Northern Rail Cup.

In defence of Fax, I don't think failure to reach the Northern Rail knockout stages will have put too large a spoke in their works. I imagine that any money allocated to playing wages for a season is secure at the start of a campaign. Hopefully, the only way it might affect them is in terms of being able to afford to recruit throughout the season.
The last thing we need is another club in financial difficulty, and in terms of a possible fine for their Ostick indiscretion, I would expect the RFL to be realistic in the figure they request.

You will find that a lot of teams dont make a profit from the Northern Rail cup. As to progress you need to win, which means large win bonuses. I think it was two years ago that our chairman said that getting to the final and loosing actually looses you money over the course of the competition. The only way you can make a profit is to win the competition or loose in the semis with a big gate e.g. last year vs Widnes.

I suspect losing two directors might have done though
