Sam, i'll answer you. But in future, please be patient, some people work for a living.
The reason people are bringing in other examples, such as ginger chanting, is because they are trying to highlight the fact, that under the RFLs respect policy, the one they quoted Cas breaching, every other set of fans are breaching this policy. I think you'll find that every Cas fan is realistic and wouldn't possibly suggest that every club should be fined for every tiny break of this policy from here on in. Chanting has always been a large part of British sport and clamping down on abusive chants doesn't just get solved by one £40k fine. If we want to sort out abusive chants it will take much longer. We can't remove everything from our terraces, but i agree there's no place for homophobic chants. But if you want Cas fans to be realistic about expecting the RFL to go easy on ginger chants, fat chants and the ref is a W chants, then we expect that the RFL and the RL community in general go easy on us when a bunch of chavvy teens and maybe a few neandathalic men chant a couple of homophobic songs. Had it been a terrace full of Cas fans singing, i'd be absolutley embarressed at our fans and club but since us lot were at the game and either witnessed it, or never even heard a whisper, we feel pretty hard done by.
The point though, is why did Cas get singled out on this instance? We also question the severity of the fine and we also feel that our club couldn't have done anymore at the time to stop the chants. It was a tiny number of fans (15-20 i dunno) in a section that had around 2k fans in. the chanting was for a very short period and even some of the fans close by couldn't spot who was singing it. If there was hbomophobic chanting at every home game and Cas sat on their bums and ignored it every week then fair enough. But this happened 3 times in one game and was drowned out the last two times by the PA system.
