Shaun Lunt : Sun Aug 23, 2009 10:08 am
Thought he had a great game against Saints the other night and has barely put a foot wrong every time I've seen him play for Huddersfield this season.

What's really frustrating is he should be doing that for Cas.

About 4 or 5 seasons ago he was looking a promising young number 9 for Cas but we allowed him to go on loan to one of the Cumbrian clubs (Workington or Barrow I believe) to get more first team game time. Then we allowed him to leave permanently.

It now seems we're about to do the same with Ryan Boyle - release a promising youngster just because he hasn't made the grade in Superleague by the age of 21.

I appreciate we can't keep everyone due to the salary cap and limited resources, but why don't we do like Saints have done with Scott Moore and allow these youngsters to go on long term loans either to other SL clubs or to Championship sides?

Can't help but think we'll see Ryan Boyle smashing us down the middle in 3 or 4 years time playing for one of our SL rivals.

Absolutely.

What's really frustrating is that both these players showed so much potential to begin with.

i.e sometimes a player does nothing for you then moves on and looks the business

However, Lunt was always going to be a top player, and Boyle has never looked less than acceptable and sometimes exceptional - I also fully agree that as a prop it is alarming how much better he will undoubtedly become. :x

Aye, Lunt was every bit as promising as the likes of Huby & Shenton who were of a similar generation yet we kept them and let Lunt go. I can only imagine it was because we thought we were strong in the hooking role at the time.

Boyle has perhaps been unfortunate to come along at the same time as Westerman and Owen otherwise he would have been seen by many Cas fans as the really outstanding youngster in our squad.

AFAIK the requirements for club trained players continue to increase over the next few seasons so greater premium should be put on players such as Boyle than say Higgins - a player of similar current standard but not club developed.

I'm also a bit mystified by TM comments with regards to how we can't keep Feather because he wants a bit more and we can't keep Boyle because he wants a bit more; either:

a) we have plenty of cap space - they are both good players - give them a bit more; or

b) we're a bit skint lets combine what we offered both and give that sum to one of them

Castleford coach Terry Matterson would like to keep the ex-Wakefield, Leeds and Bradford player, but explained the reasoning behind the club's offer.
He said: "The thing with Chris is that we got him when he was contracted to Bradford and they paid some of his wage this year.
"It's very hard to keep everyone. We've found it hard to fit him in, but I wish him all the best and we'll see what happens.
"Chris has been very good for us and he's happy here and doesn't really want to play for anyone else over here.
"The door is not 100 per cent closed on him at the moment, but it's very hard to wait until the end of the season for some people so he's looking at that option of playing in Australia."

Reading between the lines, Cas are offering to continue paying him what we paid him this year. However, in reality this would be a pay cut for Feather as he'll lose the "subsidy" that Bradford pay.

It was either a radio or web interview.
