You can genuinely be compensated for breach of copyright. Every photo ever taken is covered by copyright, owned in usual circumstances by the person who took the photos. Unless a contract states otherwise. They should seek written permission to use the shots. I used to be photographer, and people stealing my images cost me a small fortune.
