Temptation, greets you like your naughty mate,

In fairness there was one chaser in Jones-Buchanan (no surprises there) but that aside I couldn't believe the play either.
We were 40 metres out with one tackle remaining, in the wet. it may not have been the most calculated decision, but there was no guarantee at all that we'd have managed a dropgoal from the position we were in.

Actually we were almost on the 20 and it was tackle 3 I believe. One drive up the middle against a still retreating Cas defensive line and then a drop from 25 out slap in front should have been a no brainer.

Correct. From the tap restart Smith took it up, tackle one. Webb, Lauitiiti, Senior and McGuire moved it to Hall, tackle two. Buderus to McGuire and the rest is history.

The textbook play from tackle two was to drive towards the posts on tackle three and then take the one pointer on tackle four, five or six whenever a clear opportunity arose.

What McGuire did was wrong, no wonder he was jumping around when Sinfield slotted the two.

Watched it again on the SLS. You're both right, the play was much dafter than I first thought. In fairness to McGuire he perhaps did not know how much time was left on the clock. What the hell was (the otherwise outstanding IMO) Buderus doing going blind at that stage? There was only McGuire out there.

You'll note I didn't pick you up on it.

When McGuire kicked forward the clock read 79:45, when Shenton picked it up the clock read 79:51, when the penalty was awarded and Leeds elected to take the two the clock stopped at 79:57.

Shenton should have taken a step back and let McGuire attempt to regather before tackling him. Leeds would have had one play the ball maximum to win the game. Nice to see Shenton winning games for Leeds without the need to actually have him on the books.

To be fair to McGuire, he wouldn't have been expecting to get the ball wide on the left, but he did.

Had he have driven it in, we'd have been well off centre, with little time left for a drive and a drop goal.

He did the right thing in getting more central, and probably knew there was only second left. Not enough time for 2 more tackles, and the act of getting central resulted in lost yards. Not sure we'd have got another tackle in in that time.

Textbook wise it was the wrong option, and I thought so at the time, but all that matters is that we got the 2 points from a tough game.

Having thought about it..
A) There's no way McGuire would have had time to see how long was left. He would have had a rough idea at best.
B) Shenton should have left it, without doubt. McGuire was very unlikely to score from where the ball was positioned. However, had he tackled McGuire would he still be offside, if he was infront of Sherwin? Or does the fact McGuire's picked it up then put him onside? It's amazing how few of the rules of this game I actually know, despite playing it for a long time.

Discussed hereearlier today.

I made a similar comment somewhere on here as well.
