They were, but they were a bugger when you carried the ball into contact, and a lot more difficult to offload.

I believe they actually changed the design of the 8 panel balls after the first season of using them as they were too"round" ! the second design was a bit longer and thinner and a much better ball, I think the steedons are far better though!

presumably the 8 panel balls are only made by Gilbert, and the RFL has a deal with Steedon now.
