I find it a bit of a strange one. JP will be 35 this year, and despite being willing to run his blood to water, is simply not the prop he was 5 years ago.
If the new contract is an acknowledgment of the great service he has given to the club, and maybe some kind of indicator that there is a role for him at Headingley in a couple of years, then I'll happily applaud GH for his thinking.

But we really should be looking for much younger replacement for next season.

I am not so sure age is a big issue here. There is no way in this world that JP will make the WC, let alone the end of 2014, unless his game time reduces.

Therefore I would imagine the plan is to ensure he is fit and ready for where it is really required. A fit and hungry Peacock, whether as good as 5 years ago or not, is still more than a match for other props playing in Super League.

If the plan is for him to play in no more than say 18 games in 2013, and then down to 15 in 2014, but to ensure he is available for when it matters and mentoring the young players, this works for me.

If I were the Chairman of a rugby club then Peacock is the kind of individual that I'd like to keep involved on an active basis in pretty much any capacity, even if that involved extending his 'playing' contract for what seemed to be an overly generous length of time. If he plays 5 games out of the 2014 season, then I'd still wager that his talismanic influence on every other player, and the club as a whole, will deliver a return on every penny paid to him.

Glad he's signed up. though he hasn't looked at the top of his game so far this season. it gives us 2 years to manage his replacement

How do you know we arent looking for a replacement? How do you know that they will keep using Peacock as the battering ram he is over the course of the next 2 years. Kylie is leaving so if we bring a good young prop in to start with Bailey and have Peacock and Griffin/Moore coming off the bench I don't see a problem.

If you're not going to learn to use capital letters and punctuation marks, why bother spending any longer than that?

Nice to see yet another legend finishing his playing career at Leeds. 2 years sounds good to me.

Who knows.

He seems to re-sign and people forget.

Possibly this type of deal is what produces the kind of loyalty to the club that Sinfield referred to after last year's grand final?
GH has consistently exhibited this throughout his tenure at the club.
But he hasn't been afraid to be ruthless when he felt that his loyalty wasn't being rewarded eg Cummins & Poching.
