Could it be, with the ground redevelopment work and the consequential reduction in capacity for next season, that keeping the wage bill down looks attractive to GH? Maybe a decision has been taken to ride our luck again next season and build for 2018 and beyond. Keep the cash as a contingency fund for the ground redevelopment / war chest to pick up playing staff for 2018. Or is that just a touch too cynical?

If you were cynical you could add that he can hide the drop in crowds due to ground re-development and not the fact people are displeased with the product.

If you were cynical....

It's too cynical and also not how Hetherington works - he is as well aware as anyone else that the key to being profitable is for the team to be competitive and the playing budget is not even close to being on the list of things they'd cut if they needed to save money (which they don't really).

A better question is whether the way Hetherington manages the cap is still the best way.

As I said elsewhere, the loss of Zak and Achurch this year should leave us well under the cap. Not spending that and hoping we get lucky and the other top teams get unlucky is bonkers.

With McGuire becoming injury prone, Lilley being young and Sutty at FB we could be in for another year of directionless rugby.

While you would think we should have some brass left Segyaro and ferres will be eating into some of the salary left by these players.

I imagine when we shift hardaker a signing will be brought in. Hopefully not some project or squad player but who knows, there has been a fair bit of activity in the transfer market with the top teams strengthening while we appear to be doing very little at this time.

I think he's worked out that he can get away with another 2-3 seasons of rubbish before crowds start to drop significantly. I think he's also looked at how poor the rest of SL is and fancies us getting at least top 6 next year to generate playoff revenue and with a bit of luck in the CC draw semi's are not out of the question.
