The state of the club and the expectation of the fanbase are 2 different things.
Even so,If we'r going back decades, maybe, but thats probably you taking the statement a bit too literal, to paint a clearer picture, its certainly the lowest the fanbase expectation has been in recent history, possibly the last 20 year.

I’ve watched since 1972 and can’t think of many times when the level of quality, class and entertainment on the park was as low as it currently is. Early 80’s was pretty poor, 1987 was dire when we stayed up on points difference and 1996 again was grim when GH and Caddick came in. As a result, expectations drift down in line with that, so I generally agree that for Smith or anyone else it’s not a bad time to come in. If these young hopefuls have got it, Smith will get it out.
The current position feels similar to early 80’s to me, then it was Jack Myerscough who had lost his edge, now it’s GH and we seem to be drifting. In 1972 the backs were Holmes, Smith, Hynes, Dyl, Atkinson, Hardisty and Hepworth. Even though a few of those were still around in 1982, you’d pick all 7 from 72 v 82. Feels about the same for 2012 v 2022.
