Just so me and you can draw a line under this misreading.
Donald is out of contract at end of season. He is not going to get offers from the NRL and Union. He aint good enough for that. He can not be approached before a certain time by other super league clubs. (yes I know what happens in reality, but we still had time anyway). There was absolutely no need for the club to be offering him a new deal at this time. And if anything he should have been made to earn it more in relation to this seasons performances to date.
On the other hand. Smith established himself last season into the star that some of us more educated people on here, knew he would be. He took an honour that not many players can say they have earned, in a GF winning MOM. At that point our CEO said there is no chance of Smith leaving and we will set a priority in getting a new deal for him. That was announced to the media.
Up until a few weeks back, that had not happend. No offer had been made to Smith. This despite Wigan already announcing their interest last season, and speculation surrounding union clubs. Not only that but since that GF he also went on to become an International, which under Leeds own salary structure then entitles him to an increase.
Now, if you were a non biased CEO of any company in a similar situation to those scenarios above what would you have done? I would be suprised if you do not be honest and say that Smiths contract should have been discussed upon long before now. Therefore that is the point.
I give up. Nearly. This whole conversation is now about Lee Smith. THe thread is about Scott Donald. Whatever is going on with Lee Smith's contract is NOTHING to do with Scott Donald's contract, unless we are operating considerably closer to the full salary cap than most seem to think. Frankly, if we can't afford 2 senior wingers (if we're still counting Smith as a winger) in the squad, then Lee Smith leaving is the least of our worries.
If you want a thread about Lee Smith and his contract, go ahead, I know nothing about his contractual situation or what point negotiations are up to, so I'd be unlikely to join in. I do know that I am pleased Scott Donald has signed an extension, and I am also fairly confident that this has nothing to do with Lee Smith or the club's priorities. Unless we can only afford one of them (which I doubt) or negotiations are only possible with one player at a time (which I seriously doubt).
