let's hope it is a tough pre season.
we looked well under cooked start of last season.

In the flip side i don’t want is to start all guns blazing then fall off a cliff like Warrington, Wigan got the approach spot on last year.

However we do need to look something like from the off otherwise the knives will be out

I’ve a feeling that Miller maybe a marquee signing as well as Croft. GH has been banging the Miller drum a lot.

Sutton does a lot of good dirty work, grafting from marker etc. if fit he would be good for us but would guess we are short of cap to get him i. Hope I’m wrong

Is Sutton the right kind of player? I guess we will enquire or have already.

If we’re going to spend bigger in a prop I’d prefer one who can really bend the line. We have a very workmanlike pack we lack punch if anything.

It's a fair point, but our options are very limited for this season because we have no quota spaces to play with. Maybe signing a technically competent prop like Sutton might allow a player like Holroyd to cut back on minutes and focus on being the line bending prop you are after. He certainly has the potential to do that. More than one way to skin a cat, as they say.

Good point if we have cap space. Sutton plus Kershaw in and Olpherts out. Not sure we could do better with recruitment and retention under a Cap situation. Even if every new player doesn’t work out we would be so much stronger. I suppose it all depends on Cap space unless there are more departures. It will also be interesting to see if one of the lesser known names turns out to be one of the better signings like last season. Well not long to wait.

I'm still surprised we kept Bentley tbh, given the emergence of McDonnell and we have Gannon and O'Connor.
Fair chunk of cap there.
I still think maybe Johnson will go, hopefully only on loan (and to York again).

Agree the options are limited. Sutton similar size to Wilson but proven at a much higher level. In theory to me if signed Sutton Oledski and Holroyd would be our core front rowers. Lisone and Sangare both have the size to deliver the line bending impact we crave but to date neither have the consistency fitness or defensive work rate to play the required level of minutes in a tight game.Hopefully they kick on this year but the jury is out on if they can improve to the required level for me.
The line breaking prop with size who plays big minutes and does their defensive work is few and far between and that's why they command big salaries. From what's available I think Sutton along with Ackers would provide the glue that would give greater consistency in our pack and avoid burnout from Oledski and Holroyd.

Bit of a squeeze isn't it? Beyond 2024 I don't see how we can keep Martin and fusitua while offering the likes of Newman and Johnson the kind of upgrades they probably think they're worth.
