What I can't work out is if the video ref can without doubt say that the McGuire no try was a no-try because JJB knocked on, but he's not allowed to judge on a forward pass because its inconclusive.

Because things such as momentum (for want of a better word) don't matter for knock ons. Look at where the ball was touched, look at where it ends up - if it is in front, it's a knock on.

Different rules apply for forward passes.

I'm not going to stoop to the comparing jobs level, but judging by your posts I certainly wouldn't swap.

No. It's treated under the Otherwise rule.
