1970 Ashes winning tourists : Mon Jun 29, 2020 3:02 pm
Just watched the 1st test ,the only game lost on the tour I believe. Great to see Shoey and Atky well involved, Duggie Laughton had a good game and Mal Reilly well, what a fantastic player he was ! Hopefully the 2 winning test matches will be on later this week ( Rugby League Cares website )

How do you know when games are on the site and is there any way of watching them at other times?

After that first test defeat, they picked a pack of Hartley, Fisher, Watson, Laughton, Jimmy Thompson and Reilly with Hepworth at scrum half.
I doubt a dirtier front row has ever played and with that 4 behind them it was one tough, high quality outfit up front. With 4 class Leeds backs behind with Frank Myler and Millward, it was a great side.

Only a very suspect display of reffing in the last test kept the Aussies in it with a great goal kicker, if memory serves we scored five tries to one in the last test.
Will we ever beat them again?i

Won all 3 tests in NZ as well

Went to all 3 tests a year or so after arriving here. That first test was brutal and written up here as "The Battle Of Brisbane" with Cliff Watson seemingly taking on the whole Aussie pack particularly the prop Jim Morgan and Artie Beetson. The 2 remaining tests at the SCG were both won by GB with Watson continuing to annoy the Aussie pack. Beetson was sent off in the 3rd test decider. This was the last time GB won an Ashes series.

I was fortunate to see the 2 Yorkshire matches in the winning 1959 Ashes series which was also the last time GB won a series in England. Similar to the 1970 series we lost the first 1st quite heavily but won the remaining 2.

Begs the question...... One player played in the 1959 GB series win and was in the touring squad for the 1970 win. Who was he?

Sir Alec of Murphy maybe?

We have a winner. Whiteley played in the 2 wins in 1959 and was coach in the 1970 series.
