The Wolf of Wall Street - 6.

Seen it before. Watched it again to see if I could figure out why it is hyped as much as it is. Still can't see it.

There's just no likeable characters in the film. The story really doesn't go anywhere. I'd read Jordon Belfort's books before seeing the film and I have read a lot about Wall Street in the past so that might be part of it, but I just don't think the film was anywhere near as good as it should have been.

The Zero Theorem - Terry Gilliam's films always make me feel a bit thick, like I'm missing something...

Anyway, it was nice to look at and well acted, particularly Christoph Waltz in the lead role, but I have no idea what it was about. 6/10

The Babadook - it is supposed to be truly frightning according to the guff on the box. Terrible film so I give it 1/10.

The first or second film? I enjoyed the first one and have watched it a fair few times like I have the TV series. The second film is pretty pointless though.

The first one.

I hadn't watched the TV series at all until it was just shown on a re-run on E4. I loved pretty much every episode. But I thought the film really sucked.

Don't go near the second film then, it's terrible. A bit like Hangover 3 - no need.

A few I've caught recently, some good ones:
'71 - brilliant. Loved every moment of this - grim, gritty and harsh, well shot and well acted, a great film. Nothing more to be said apart from 9/10.

The Imitation Game - just superb in every way. Watch it. 9/10.

Nightcrawler - also excellent, though fails a little on realism and for me the reactions of the key characters don't always ring true to events. Still I'll give it 8/10.

John Wick - very good at what it does, which is basically just a shoot 'em up. 6/10

Whiplash - had a 'professional' interest in this having been trained as a drummer/percussionist in many genres since childhood, including several intensive jazz workshops culminating in a showcase gig in front of a load of big jazz names. As a result, loved this, but still great film in its own right. 9/10.

What We Do In The Shadows - I'd heard rave reviews about this but antipodean humour again fails to engage me. I laughed 1.5 times, the wife laughed once. Killed some time but pretty lame. 5/10

The Best Offer - brilliantly shot and acted, but from very early on I had the key mystery sussed which kind of spoiled it. Still deserves 9/10 on quality alone.

Prisoners - another good Jackman performance, not much to fault - does what you'd expect - gripping and tense although a few holes in the plot, still worth 8/10

The Equaliser - a world away from the Woodward series, but nevertheless a very decent film. Worth a go at 7/10.

Interstellar - as a 'hard' sci-fi film can't fault it, delivers on the 'human' level as well as the geek level, interesting and engaging throughout - I'll give it 9/10.

The Interview - does exactly what it says on the tin. A daft comedy with few genuine 'lol' moments, but entertaining nonetheless. 7/10.

American Sniper - unlike others, I didn't expect some huge moral revelations from a few trailers featuring a young boy in the sights of said sniper. So, false expectations aside, as a film called 'American Sniper' it absolutely delivers. If you want a pro-West shoot-'em up with a few emotional tugs and a great performance from Miller, give it a go. I'll give it 8/10.

When The Game Stands Tall - if Yankee football or inspiring sports films are your thing you'll love it. I'll give it 7/10.

Edge of Tomorrow - as generally happens, this was a great book (All You Need is Kill) but a pretty dull film, exacerbated by the eminently unlikeable Tom Cruise and the blank cypher that is Emily Blunt; it's basically a Groundhog Day type time twister, wherein Tom gets to relive the same day over and over and learn bit by bit how to survive an alien invasion and save humanity - a bit like playing a video game and going back to a save point every time you get killed. Great effects, great source material, loads of money - but it fails to engage.

Add this to the list of classic sci-fi books, badly realised on screen. 5/10
