Roaring Currents

A Korean film based on true life naval battle between the Koreans and the Japanese in the 16th century.

The Korean commander was Sun yi Sun.

Unbelievable story how the remains of the Korean navy ( 13 ships) took on the Japanese navy ( 133 ships).

The battle of Trafalgar with subtitles.

Legend

6/10

Another rehash of the Kray story with Tom Hardy doing a good job of playing both brothers. Nothing new here but a passable reselling that filled an hour of my weekend.

Everest

8/10

Telling the true story of the 1996 disastrous Everest expedition.

Much like the Revenant he movie is panoramic and awe inspiring with its backdrop of the Himalyas in all its deadly beauty coupled with the relentless sheer brutality and disregard for human life that nature displays.

Well worth watching at the cinema if you want to marvel at the backdrop but the acting and the story will also make this a very watchable movie on the TV.

Now You See Me - 4 stage magicians are recruited by a bitter and twisted undercover stage magician, to wreak revenge on the world for something or other, resulting in them joining a super- secret society of magicians who can probably possibly maybe do actual real magic. The result is a ridiculously pompous mess of a movie, that takes itself far too seriously and ends up laughably incoherent. Morgan Freeman looks embarrassed as he dials in a standard wise mentor performance, and Woody Harrelson seems faintly amused by the ridiculous premise that this movie was actually funded by a studio.

A god-awful 3/10

Goosebumps

Kids 9 and 11 loved it.

Not sure whether the RL stine portrayal was tongue in cheek or not comparing himself to Stephen King or whether it was the writers / director doing a homage to Stine.
Either way he will sell a lot more Goosebumps books

Sicario - a downbeat, depressing and positively disturbing portrayal of the drug war that rages on the US/Mexico border; with tactics ranging from the questionable to the downright corrupt, the US are portrayed as secretly controlling the trade to achieve a 'least worst' scenario, in the face of unstoppable demand. Del Toro plays an avenging assassin with his usual menace, albeit that element of the storyline is a bit implausible - or maybe it isn't?!

It won't make you feel good - but it will definitely keep you interested; 8/10

Deadpool. Very funny and well directed. Crammed full of jokes and doesn't take itself seriously. Recommended to those with a juvenile yet adult sense of humour.

8/10

I also saw Spotlight, starring Michael Keaton about the true story of the cover-ups by the Catholic Church of priests molesting children in Boston. Considering the dark subject matter the film is a real masterpiece and deserves much more recognition. Incredibly well written and acted, I urge people to go and see it.

We went to see Spotlight last night. I didn't think it would appeal to me tbh but since it picked up best picture at the Oscars I thought I would give it a go. I thought it was excellent. As you can imagine from the subject, it's not exactly the feel good film of the year, but I would urge anyone to go see it. Really compelling stuff. I also kind of expected it to just be a vehicle to bash the Catholic Church, but it wasn't, it was very sensitively handled I felt.

To be honest, I think a lot of people may not see the film due to its central subject matter, and it would be a real shame as it's one of the best movies I've seen in a while. Hopefully, the oscar win will lift its profile.

Grimsby. The whole cinema was laughing. If you like Viz you will find this F ing hilarious I did.

My only disappointment was people laughing at the idea of firing fireworks out of your booty. I did that 37 years ago !!!!!!
