The scrolling bar at the bottom should go quicker in relation to the match speed (but not too quick). If you have a faster game it takes about 3 minutes to catch up.
Also in the match screen, can subs swap with the player they've replaced rather than just staying in the interchange part the whole time? Hard to tell what your team actually is.
