Would Matty??????????????? : Tue Sep 10, 2013 6:12 pm
Why is it when someone signs for the pies they are automatically international standard. Is it because their coaching staff are brilliant; as in transforming a half decent front rower from Rochdale into an international within weeks (Noel Cowie) remember him? and many others since. Now we have Matty Smith, is he playing any better than he did at Salford; I don't think so. If Matty was still at Salford he would not have got a look in for the dream team. As for Tomkins, he has certainly not set the DW stadium alight this season. Now the opposition realise he is only effective coming off his left foot and is suspect on the bomb and tackling head on he has been practically nullified, yet still gets in the dream team. There must be a covenant between wigin and the RL that a certain number from pieland will be selected for intentional duties even though the dream team is hypothetical.

Of course he wouldn't, it was a ridiculous inclusion overlooking numerous halves that have performed far better than Matty Smith. I'm happy for him as a St Helens lad that he's got in there but it still doesn't mean he deserves it. It's the same crap that ended up with Kevin Sinfield being a golden boot winner last year, both are equally ridiculous.

He's got in the dream team because he's played consistently well in a top 4 team and is the Lance Todd trophy winner. Whilst his standard of play may not be that much better, he's now in a team that is winning more than it's losing (bar the last few months lol) and that always means a lot.

I did feel there were some lazy selections in the dream team.
I'm not arguing Tomkins is the best full back, but he's missed a lot of rugby and players like Ratchford imo have seemed to have a better season on the whole.

Last night I finally got round to watching the Leeds Wigan game from last week and Matty certainly didn't look like dream team material to me.

We have the worst attack in the league over the last 5 SL games (may even be 9 cant quite remember) We also have the 5th worst defence over the same number of games. Will anyone look dream team material with results and performances like that?

How Smith has beaten Richie Myler to a dream team place is beyond me, Myler has looked very good every time I have seen him this year...had been suggested Myler had missed too much of the season to be included, yet managed 2 more games than both Tomkins & Ben Crooks

As for England, I think he will still be behind Sinfield, Widdop and Roger so cant see him being picked for World Cup

The best 6 and 7 this season without a doubt has been Chase and Brough. Just handy to move the 7 to incorporate Matty.

Back in the day players moved to Wigan became full time and benefited from the additional fitness and general conditioning that brought. It was no accident they used to score alot at the end of each half. .. But of course having a squad of full time pro's made no difference
