Turner : Sat Jul 11, 2015 6:04 am
I've mentioned a few times on here in the last few weeks how poor I think Turner is defensively. It's not his actual tackling that's the problem, it's his decision making, him flying up and him planting his feet. While Walsh is poor at the actual tackling, this is made to look much worse because of Turner's defense. I apologise for the long post...but there are pictures too

First try down our left hand side that actually came from a line break last week is the one to take us to 22-0 down. This one is clearer on video than in a photo, but Turner comes in unnecessarily on Ablett (the lead runner). Not too much, just enough that Hardaker has got him beat on the outside. Walsh then has to check himself in case Hardaker runs the ball, Watkins is then easily on the outside of him and so on.
http://gyazo.com/9166efc9b04d1cfa613bdb6448b57514

Second try of note in that match was the one by Ablett. Walsh is partly at fault here, because he's turned his hips (which are now facing the touchline, leaving him vulnerable to the sidestep). But Turner has planted his feet too when Watkins passes the ball, which means that when Ablett does put that big step on to the inside, there is a lot more space than there should be.
http://gyazo.com/e360b7ec34fcee66ced318c4962f4c36

Huddersfield's second try last night. The first picture is the tackle before they score. Turner shoots in despite it being a 3 on 3 beforehand. Huddersfield don't take advantage. Next tackle, Turner shoots in on what was a 3 v 3, Swift has to follow him, and Huddersfield kick behind Swift and score.

There was another two tries scored down that side, the third and fourth. Third was just an all round farce. Fourth I think Greenwood is too tight so Huddersfield had a 4 v 3 and you can't really blame Turner or Walsh. It was something Wells mentioned in his analysis too. He said that Turner has put on a lot of size in a short space of time which means he's struggling with mobility more than usual. This combined with his reading is costing us a lot of points, but as it's not as obvious as a missed tackle, people only talk about Walsh missing a tackle or Swift not being marking his opposite winger.

It's nothing new mate. I said he was poor defensively before he even arrived. I've been saying it from day one. It's sticking out like sore thumb since Walsh came back because teams are targeting walsh and obviously with walsh inside him makes it worse.

It is mostly his decision making but he's also pretty poor when a player doesn't run straight at him. It's a shame as he's been very good with the ball.

30 nil will get you a win

Shenton's Castleford form is a far cry from his form when at Saints. Shenton never really settled in with the Saints and he let himself and the team down by constantly under performing. Turner has his faults but I would have him over Shenton any day.

Shenton was here when we had no halves at all and lacked good ball. He didn't like the travel every day either and that got to him. Shenton was good player but just didn't work out.

Re: Turner : Sat Jul 11, 2015 1:52 pm
The very nature of Saints' compacted defensive pattern means Turner & Swift are always under pressure. If our forwards do their job and attack the opposition on or around the advantage line then it's not a problem. If, however, we instead hang back and allow the opposition pack to advance onto us (as happened last night, at Leeds and during the second half at Cas), Turner & Swift are put in an extremely difficult position.

If Cunningham really believed Turner & Swift were a liability he could easily switch to a more evenly spaced defensive pattern which would significantly reduce the number of times they are left isolated.

The fact that he doesn't suggests to me that he is very concerned that some of our bigger forwards could be undone by nippier halves and hookers with good footwork and given the choice between this or Turner & Swift occasionally getting caught out he'd much prefer the latter. On this point I agree with him. Our pack is at its best defending quick and tight.

Again, there's nothing stopping him switching Turner & Percival. But even though Percival is one of the best defensive centres in the business, anyone who seriously believes he'll completely block up that channel will be in for a shock.

The new young dynasty of super saints is coming to a ground near you.

We ruined Shenton when he was at Saints, he was starved of quality ball but he was pretty good defending one on one. Turner is the complete opposite, but improvements are there if he is coached correctly.
