Is Thompson injured or out of favour at the moment? I cannot fathom how KC would choose Richards over him if he is fully fit.

Second season syndrome and he's had a couple of injuries. Richards is in because of his steady defence doesn't miss many tackles.

I completely agree. I heard a rumour that he had been playing with injections all season and so was being rested until next season - however him waring up as part of the 18 on Thursday puts that into doubt. For me, he looks 10x the player Richards does who at his very best looks like a poor mans Paul Clough
