Never really bought into it, always thought it should be a 9's comp instead.

When league fixtures didn't really matter it wasn't much of a problem, but now that there's more of a premium on league places it is dodgy. A nines tournament would be a good solution, and I think I'd be more likely to go if that was on offer. There would need to be a significant incentive - probably in the form of a cash prize - for clubs to take it seriously, though, otherwise it would end up being a reserves event.

No one would turn out to a 9s competition, it would be scrapped in 2 years after making a massive loss.

TBH the suggested solutions in the article are worse than the original problem they are trying to solve.
