Realistically the whole reserve grade system needs an overhaul. A Toyota U20 style competition with games played prior to the Super League fixture is the way to go. More experienced players coming back from injury or out of form would have to drop down a level on loan.

As it happened Saints didnt play any first team players, but Wigan went ahead and played a number of first team regulars.

Goulding, Mathers and Tim Smith played for Wigan. With those 3 reserves in your team, Wigan should go well in the reserve league.

Prescott and Mossup also played and yes they will.

But they'd be even better with Tomkins, Ainscough and McIlorum in there.

Seriously, wouldn't it be a much better competition if all the clubs adopted that approach.

In some way I agree, but what would happen if one of the Superleague reserve sides won the NL1 competition.

Where would that leave the likes of Widnes, Leigh etc application for Superleague at the next franchise?

if they cant beat a superleague sides' reserve team they dont deserve a license

That way they'd get a more competitive game but they would be way to many games to accommodate in a season.
