That's a fair point. But we thought we had 2 HBs in Lomax and Gaskell.

Some of the recruitment prior to him was terrible, nd the team was as a result shocking.
Hes done very well with what he has, moved Lomax to FB in preference to our club legend and captain, a brave move.
Hes doing a great job of rebuilding and introducing the youngsters.
Im very pleased with his progress

Re: Nathan Brown - What do we think? : Mon Aug 19, 2013 7:42 pm
I'm still to be convinced.

Our turnaround in the Wigan game was brought about by McManus rather than Brown. In this week's League Express Hohaia in his interview refers to the players receiving a kick in the pants from McManus. Given the very poor standard of play in most of our matches this year, particularly at home (and especially against Hull KR), it would appear Brown is not that hot on discipline, either in terms of penalties given away or with ball in hand, and until very recently our defence had become very weak. I used to be fairly sure we could defend our line for long periods but under Brown we became very soft. Our defence now does appear to have improved. However, according to all reports (and the radio commentary), our overall performance against Wakey suggests our attitude towards ball retention and overall discipline has slipped back to pre-Wigan match standards, which is concerning. We are going to struggle enough without a single recognised halfback playing at halfback without giving the opposition invitations into the match with poor ball retention and bad discipline.

Speaking of halfbacks, I thought Brown was a complete idiot to get rid of Gaskell, leaving us without any halfbacks at all. Gaskell's attitude (if he had one) is no excuse. The coach is paid to man manage and so he should have done so instead of leaving us so vulernable all season. The temporary presence of O'Brien, who while a hard worker was no world beater (not as yet anyway), shows what a positive impact an actual halfback can have on a team.

I don't like his tweaking, and he tried it again in the second half against London. He needs to stop. That is one of the most annoying features of his coaching and I know he drove Huddersfield fans to distraction with it. It's one thing managing a squad or providing opportunities for young players to have a go at first grade; it's entirely another to change the personnel so much that it causes break down in communication and all manner of confusion, especially when injuries have not forced his hand.

I do like it that we can score from deep these days, and some of our tries have been special. Saints recently compiled a 'top 10 so far' clip of tries we have scored this season and while they were all good, some were terrific. However, we aren't going to be as good as we could have been in the attack department without any recognised halfbacks so keeping Lomax and our backline generally (which is looking nifty since Brown copied Simmons and shifted Meli to centre) fit and playing well is vitally important to our hopes for the rest of the year IMO. We are going to be overly dependent on them for tries I think.

I think I would sooner judge Brown next season now he has settled in. First half of this season the players attitude was shocking, McManus helped Brown by going public on the unacceptance.
Probably the positive side of Brown is how he has handled the development of the younger players, Makinson had stagnated but is a much better player now, Turner is performing consistently than when he was at Hull, I also think he has handled Walmsley very well.
With the 2 Penrith players and a rejuvenated Roby we should be a better outfit next year this should hopefully mean less tinkering next season.

No need for that and very childish. Very predictable too.

I suppose you will try and turn this into another session of personal attacks and spoil what might otherwise be a decent swap of opinions? You usually do.

I don't think he's done anything to suggest we'll ever win a trophy under him. His hallmark at Huddersfield was pacey, athletic backs and an ultra aggressive pack. Granted we don't have the quality backs that Huddersfield have, but there is none of the aggression showing either.

Granted we don't have superb halves either, but there is no sign of any concerted gameplan or structure to our attack either.

4/10 so far.

I have to disagree, strongly. I'm not sure why you can be so convinced that the turnaround in form is because of a chairman and not the coach?

McManus said some stuff in the press but that came before the Cas game (didn't it?) yet we were vey lucky to win that one I thought.

Anyway, I thought that our turnaround came in the Hudds game. We lost that one, but I think we showed enough in that game to suggest that we were starting to click. We should have really won that one but for their defence to keep us out. We then comfortably beat both Bradford and Salford. The Hull KR games was not great, but I think it was a blip. We didn't handle the conditions well at all and there was a lot of dropped ball.

I used to be fairly sure we could defend our line for long periods but under Brown we became very soft. Our defence now does appear to have improved.

Surely, this is a coaching point? You APPEAR to have given a compliment to the coach but that's after you put the knife in about the same aspect of our play?
