No strength in depth anymore in Superleague, all clubs hanging onto there experienced players, Peacock, Sinfield, O'Loughlin, Westwood, Wilkin, Wello etc.
In our case perhaps Saddened can tell us who our next inspirational leader and captain is going to be, I can,t think of anybody.........LMS perhaps.
Utterly pathetic. No appreciation of the fact that he's terrible and keeping a kid out of the side.
The next quote is also ridiculous "Wellens also backed Saints to go all the way in the play-offs, despite suffering season-ending injuries to playmakers Luke Walsh, Jon Wilkin and Jonny Lomax.
He said: “We’ve had to come up with a different system to play with. We’ve had to rip up the play book in some respects and condense all the work we’d normally do on combinations in a two to three week period. It’s not ideal but needs must.
“But everyone has really embraced it and things are coming together.”
Not sure being embarrassed at home by Warrington is 'coming together'. But then that shows his captaincy capabilities off well. The whole club is suffering from a overestimation of their abilities and being top, simply because the other sides aren't going all out due to the current play off format, is again papering over the cracks.
Another thing I love about the article is how smug Wellens is about playing again. He knows as well as we all do that he can simply choose whether to get a new contract and that he's already guaranteed a spot in the 17. Again, sums the club up, no ambition and no chance of trophies over the next few years unless there is a major change in mentality. At the moment 'ok' is enough.
+1
Nathan Brown "Sorry Wello! We have already had a collection and got a card. Too late to go back now!!!"

Well, considering the amount of injuries we've had to key players this season, Wellens has got us out of a few holes. He's been mostly inspirational in some big games, scoring try's and setting up plenty of others including some match winners...yes, at this stage of his career I'd rather have somebody else stepping up to the plate, leading us or some talent from the youth team stepping up and grabbing the bull by the horns. None of these things have happened. Wellens isn't stopping any talent from breaking through nor his he preventing any new signings coming in either. This is the fault of the club not producing (half backs) nor signing sufficient cover (ie O'Brien).

So when Brown decides to play it 'safe' and sticks wello in halves even though he is useless there rather than throwing in Hewitt or charnock that is not holding them back? Certainly feels like it to me.

That's Brown & the club who are holding back Hewitt & Charnock, not Wellens. And for some reason them players haven't broke through. If they were up to the challenge then they'd be in the team like a shot...
A St.Helens RL great...played for us for 16 years. That's probably longer than most of the posters on this forum have been supporting Saints, posters, who want him out, who slag him off and say that he's personally holding back the supposed emerging talent at the club...that he's stealing a living. How fickle some of you are, turning on your own captain. "It was the worst performance ever"!!! Honestly, if that's the worst performance you've seen from a player, or from a team then you've only been watching Saints for a handful of years. Get a grip. We've lost loads of key players, we have no half backs, we've had to try and change our whole style and Paul Wellens has been landed with the job of trying to drag us over the finish line....cos no other bugger's going to do it. So get off his back, be a proper supporter and support the team.
Lets get rid of Wello, question - who do we replace him with, the answer on here - Wello isn,t good enough.
So we ask again, who replaces him as captain, leader who can play if needed at full back, half back and loose forward.
Utter tosh. As Captain that would be Roby with Walsh as vice captain, is he a great leader? not so sure myself he has experience but he also has a habit of moaning at the ref alot and waving his arms around like a windmill, we have looked lacking in leadership for a while. Lets get the playing side straight too, he is way way too slow to be effective at fullback, Makinson , Swift and Hohaia can all cover 1 as well as our first choice Lomax. He is a terrible halfback and next season we will have Walsh, Burns, Hewitt, Charnock, Wilkin and even Hohaia to cover 2 spots. Loose forward?? Well take your pick, given we rarely seem to play a real loose anyway you can pick any number of our forwards to play there.
Much better than any of Alex Salmond's arguments but I'm sure it wont satisfy the sentimental ones on here who simply believe because he's been here a long time he should be able to just write his own contracts.
