Looking back now - I really do appreciate Allan Hunte. Don't get me wrong - I think Sully did a fantastic job for us. Especially after he got over his first couple of seasons when he was struggling to find his own identity. Sully was quicker than Hunte. And he had a better swerve. But Hunte was positively lethal as a finisher. Where Sully was always likely to drop one pass in ten - Hunte's hands were incredibly soft. I don't have any figures to hand but I'd be willing to bet Hunte converted a higher percentage of try-scoring opportunities.

What I wouldn't give to have Allan Hunte on the wing today. You might as well forget about putting up the high ball in his corner. Whereas his opposite number would have the devil's own job attempting to keep him out. The guy could leap most of his body height off the ground!

Hunte did his hamstring against Wire in round 8 the week before Wembley 97 whilst scoring a long distance try. Andy Haigh took his place a Wembley against the Bulls. Unfortunately Hunty was never the same player when he came back.

I fully agree about his wing play, you only have to watch back some of the season reviews between 89-96 to see what a great finisher he was-never seen a Saints winger with such a great "in and away" in the modern era and he scored some impossible tries.

All that said, I still recall him getting his fair share of stick off the popular side at various times - nobody was safe!

That's incredibly sweet of you say, Mugwump, really romantic.

Personally IMO, Sullivan had much softer hands and was a much better lover than Hunte.

What is it with these Cas players and playing in Cas? Three of the biggest movers out of the club over the last few years have been Danny Orr, Michael Shenton and Darryl Clark.

The first two were a shadow of their former selves for Wigan and us respectively and Clark looks well on the way to doing similarly at Warrington.

Taking a Cas player out of Cas is like shaving off Hercules' barnet.

Les Quirk was my favourite. Brilliant finisher.

Quirk was definitely one of the best I've seen at finishing in heavy, heavy traffic.

Not as athletic as either Sully or Hunte. But his flat-speed was probably better than the latter and possibly rivals the former.

Superb hand-off.

I remember him scoring in corner against the touring Aussie side in 1990 at Knowsley Road. Stopped us getting nilled.

And that try against Hull to win 12-10 in dying seconds. I remember a bloke talking to my dad all way through it who left a minute early...he missed a belter.

Good call, Quirk was a top winger and scored some wonderful tries. Two more that stand out for me was the CC semi in 89 v Widnes and at Old Trafford in 1990 against Wigan.

Another thing about Les, the then Saints surgeon Peter Rostron (he repaired my ACL in 93) told me Quirk was missing his ACL in both knees and still managed to play.

Yeah, I remember the CC semi try. That's incredible about him missing his ACL's!!!

This will bring back a few happy memories, I was stood right near scoreboard... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_iT4VDjGHH8
