Why though? Just because he's Wello and we all love him?
In all seriousness he offered nothing positive and was a pretty major negative for his last few seasons at fullback, holding the team back massively and contributing in a big way to our run of GF defeats. His inability to return the ball or to chime into the attacking line was like playing with a parachute attached.
Now he's moved into the bench slot, he's definitely less of a negative. But as the recent capitulations in the derby and against Leeds proved, the argument that he's an inspirational captain have no validity at all. He isn't a captain and he isn't a SL forward, he probably isn't up to SL in any position now. We're getting rid of Flanagan, who is better than Wellens, so what is the justification for resigning him?
I await the 'but he won't play every week' brigade. Technically correct as he may miss the odd game here or there. Again, not valid.
This is a big test of Eamon IMO. Resign Wello and it's proof we aren't really trying to win trophies. It's got to be the time where we question Wello himself? Surely he reads this forum? Surely he has the ability to look at his own contribution and ask if continuing at the expense of a young player is the right thing for the club?
Love his line about being more comfortable. I would be comfortable playing 12 minutes at the end of games. It could be a revolutionary idea, he never needs to retire, he could contribute what he is now until he's 70.

No, he offers good versatility, you can chuck him in anywhere and won't let you down, and were losing a lot of experience this year (laffranchi, soliola Manu etc), so limping on for a year means we don't "do a Warrington" and lose too many at once.

Kind of irrelevant given that's not the role he plays anymore.

I don't think he's any worse than Flanaghan personally (though I know that's not common opinion on here) - they imo play very similar roles in the team, don't offer much with the ball (as you like to point out) and are generally "solid". So in a straight choice between the two playing to a similar standard, why would you keep Flanaghan and lose an international standard coach in waiting (yes he was part of the coaching set up with England, and whilst I have no knowledge of the goings on I'm gonna assume that's for a reason) - having a mr dependable in the team is justifiable.

I admit, he's played far more than I expected him to, but it's the first half of the season, so who knows how much he'll play in the bit that matters.

Like the above argument.

Wello does what he's asked of, and assuming the coaching staff are happy (and since they keep picking him, I assume they are) - why would he care what's on here? Ultimately it's the coaching staff's choice (not going into your wellens picks himself conspiracy) - he's passed the baton to lomax (something which lomax has acknowledged and quoted as helping him) and ultimately which youngster is he keeping out, that can be called totally dependable, fits in wherever and keeps going no matter what? He's a better player than walker, hand Forster etc. Greenwood is looking much better, but that's why he's starting ahead of him now. Youngsters can't just be given the role, and keeping wello out the team would be the perfect motivation for one of them to really step up to first team, but currently none of them are playing well enough to do so.

Can't really argue with this post says it all really
Paul Clough is a better forward than Richards, Walker or Thompson, but we've let him go. I would presume the following, that although Clough is pretty good, he's not at the level we want for a senior forward - the step down to one of the youngsters will rarely lose us a game, but will give us the chance to properly develop potentially better players.
So if we're letting Clough (who is an infinitely better forward than Wello BTW) go, if we're letting Flash go, why on earth would we keep Wello?
We've got a hat full of players that can make tackles and not give any go forward.
Probably, in which case he'll realise this is pretty much a one man vendetta.
He's achieved a lot in his career, primarily I'd imagine through self belief and listening to the opinions of people with more experience and knowledge than him rather than those of people that post on forums. He'll only get a new deal if Brown and McManus believe he deserves one and I prefer their opinion to yours.
Allowing a senior player one more year (when they perhaps wouldn't merit it if they had only been at the club a short while) is the sort of act that shows the club looks after its players. That can help a lot when other players consider offers from elsewhere.
There's obviously a tipping point past which a player needs to be told they're no longer up to it, but from what I've seen over the years coaches always value experience, even if the benefit isn't immediately obvious from the stands.
I haven't watched Wellens this year, but as a utility sub is he really that bad?
