Morality : Thu Jun 18, 2015 10:29 pm
Interesting debates going on about the tactic of LMS being 'injured' every time we conceded a drop goal. Another interest one could have been what would have happened when SMD got injured. From memory it was a failed drop goal attempt, SMD goes down with an ankle/calf injury and can't move. Fortunately someone covered from the wing and got to it, but there was a moment where it looked as though three or four Cas would be in to score there.

As a player would you carry on and score in that situation? I take it the ref would be powerless unless it was clearly a broken bone or head injury?

It would take a very dignified and very massive sportsman to do anything like that when a game is that tight. Very Di Canio-esque. Personally don't think we would get that in our sport

I remember that incident well as I was at the game. Di Canio however was being opportunist. it added greatly to his reputation at the time which was already a bit suspect. He was surrounded by defenders, the ball was in the air, he was at the edge of the box, and he wouldn't have been able to head the ball from a standing start and score past two defenders around him and two on the line.

I thought at the time it was opportunistic and I'm still convinced. It wasn't really sportsmanship at all, it was typical posturing from Di Canio.

Just out of interest; where do you personally draw the line? Is there a line?

Oh there's a line. Plenty of them, in fact. The problem is they are mutually exclusive and inherently linked to particular frames of thought and experience.

For example, let's say I were wearing my socially responsible head I'd opine, "Absolutely. Morality is a depressingly rare commodity in RL and we should do everything in our power to foster its growth at all turns. Consequently I shall place "the line" all the way up here..."

But if this were match day and I instead had on my ruthlessly professional head I'd probably bark, "Are you CRAZY? This is a zero-sum game. Win or lose. Like a war. Anyone who has studied military strategy knows that unless you are fully committed to fighting and winning a war you have no business entering such. I'll be moral to the Pie Eaters only after we've buried them deep in the cold, cold ground. With this in mind I shall place "the line" all the way down there..."

Then if this were some time midweek, after a satisfying lunch, and I'm wearing my Science-and-Philosophy-are-cool head, I'd likely argue that "Morality does have a place in sport. But the introduction of such should never be willy nilly or in the service of the irrational forces of populism and instead warranted on a case-by-case basis and only as the end result of intelligent, sophisticated and rational debate. One "line" is almost as bad as no lines at all and I will thusly draw such here, here and here..."

And so on and so forth ...

Does that answer your question? ;)
