How can we possibly afford the squad we've got on 2300 season tickets and half the sky money - never mind bringing in anyone else?

Not saying I agree or disagree but, you only need to find the money for him for the 1st season (2014) as after that we double our sky money which will help towards further years wages bill. Another good player this season would (hopefully) help improve the chances of play off rugby at the season end and that should also increase the season ticket demand for 2015 to also help for future years. Hope that makes sense.

We have Blythe, Purtell and Henry fighting for starting positions. Whether you think they are 'unknown' or 'crap' is irrelevant. Those are the players we have.

In the reports when we signed both Gaskell and Winterstein, it was specifically mentioned that they can both play centre, so FC clearly sees them as backup. I think you can throw Sam Wood and Luke George into this category too.

So that leaves us with a total of 7 players who can play centre to some degree. That is plenty imo, and whilst I would love to see Leilua in a Bulls shirt next season, splashing the cash on a flair player is not a luxury we can afford right now.

I'm not saying we SHOULD sign a centre, just that I could understand the logic. I think it's one position (in fact maybe THE position), we're really lacking in quality at the moment. Not including Adam Henry in that, as I legitimately have no clue what he'll be like.

Whether we have players who can play it or not isn't always that relevant. I could play centre, but doesn't mean I'll be any good there. Sam Wood looks like he could be a decent player in a couple of years, but he's certainly some size off being a Super League centre yet. Having other players like George, Winterstein, Gaskell who CAN play there is nice. But they shouldn't be considered anything but backup if we get an injury or two.

Personally I'd like to see us sign a centre to replace Purtell, but it will likely have to wait until next year when he's out of contract. Until then, as you say, we can manage. But let's not pretend it's anything but managing with what we have, rather than having more than 1 or 2 good options there.

I agree that with the current budget, we shouldn't be looking at signing players we don't need. Which is why I said "if available and affordable". I wouldn't sign anyone if it wasn't affordable, as it's not worth it.

Just making the point that centre is a position we're lacking (unless Henry turns out great), so you could see why we may be looking there for potential recruits.

We currently have 27 players in the 1st team squad. That’s compared with a total of 28 used last year.

It was a fairly commonly held belief that that our squad was a little under strength in 2013 so it looks like the same situation in2014. In some ways we’ve better balance with more cover at halfback and a bit more quality in the pack. However we do lack some threat in the backs and some depth and quality in the backrow. I really can’t see us having the money to sign many more players until we get some season tickets shifted, in fact I can see us selling players to make ends meet if we’re not careful.

We’re lucky in some ways that Wakey and London are in an even bigger pickle – no slight on them intended.

I would like to see us with a few further signings to bring us up to 30. Imo is like to see us bring a centre with some power(as well as Adam Henry turning up), another prop and Ben Evans as a utility forward. I don't think it's top four tackle, but easily 5th to 8th.

Well I can't comment on whether we can afford another centre because I don't know the budgets we have but for what it is worth I think we could definitely do with another centre if possible. I wouldn't class Purtell as a starting centre, he should be on the wing if possible. I agree with hamster chops, we lack quality at centre.

Doesn't doubling our Sky money depend on where we finish at the end of next year? I think the only thing we can be sure of next season, is that we won't be on less than the others in our group. Even then, with everything up in the air for 2015, who knows how the TV cash is to be divvied up? For sure, the top eight will get the best deal but will the bottom four, who get slung out into the wilderness half way through, get the same money?

There has to be some reason for all the aggro coming out of Red Hall and I'd bet on money being at the heart of it.
