eg. Liam Farrell about a minute before he sent off Ah Van.

Never mind consistency through the games, there wasn't even consistency within 2 minutes.

Agree with most of this... despite the move to full time "professionals" I really cannot see any improvement since it began..

There are probably two/three worthy refs at most.

Tim Roby was poor yesterday at Huddersfield, his decisions and lack of control could have caused a full scale scrap as both teams were getting frustrated.

I think we will see some shockers this year - but that's nothing new is it?

As I’ve said before that standard of refs at championship is lower than it is in Super League, as you’d expect really. However with the squad we have now we shouldn’t be having too many games being decided by a ref’s call. That’s not arrogance – just a fact. Dodgy refs should only be a factor in games versus the likes of Leigh, Fev, London and maybe Fax. Those will be the close games.

In recent years when we’ve struggled we’ve needed the bounce of the ball and a few decisions to go our way and let’s face it, that never happens for struggling teams.

Roby is a ref who spends a bit of time in both divisions which sort of shows that he’s of middling standard. There are a lot that aren’t up to his standard.

How does this new VR system work when it comes to re-starts? It seemed last week that the Video Refs decided that the ref had got the right decision (no try) but for the wrong reason. But the ref seemed to decide on how to re-start. Is that right?

I'm not sure. I do wonder if the refs know either.

At least with VR we won't have to bother about it for most of the season.

Surely the refs in the championship must be even worse though? Because if they were any good, they would be SL refs and not championship refs?

This is a downside of having six pro refs IMO. It would make zero difference if the championship ones were better, the pro 6 would still officiate the top tier games.

I'd expect the refs getting the better feedback to get the higher level matches, so logically that would be SL.

Whoever we get it will be the same ref for both sides, so good bad or indifferent it's pretty irrelevant - and better than the alternative, which is to have no referee.

FWIW, I though the Ah Van sending off was pretty poor and I suspect Mr Child was dreading getting a real 'red card' incident later in the match. Have to say, if that's where the bar has been set for sending offs, then we aren't going to get many games still playing 13 a side by the 80th minute. No doubt the people who give instructions to the refs will change the rules [sorry, interpretations] around half way through the season.

The problem is more with ref obessives amongst the fans, half of whom don't even know the rules. The Ah Van sending off was very fair, and he thought so too as he pleaded GUILTY to the charge (that is, Ah Van ADMITTED that he was "reckless") and despite getting sent off has got another game ban for his trouble. iIt's a shame when even when the player himself admits the ref was right, there are still people who will argue he was wrong.

If anyone else clean KOs another player with a swinging arm they will be sent off too. I don't understand the fuss. People seem to think because Paddy is "not that sort of player" or whatever he should be let off, but it doesn't work like that.

It's conceivable that we'll need to adjust to the style of better refs in the middle 8s. We may have got used to slow play the balls only to find ourselves hammered by the ref when we play the superleague teams.

Well that's a good point. Didn't consider that
