According to the club website, Lovegrove has been forced into retirement and is joining the coaching staff with a role in the academy. Any immediate thoughts?

For me its surprising sure I remember reading a while back before joining us rugby was a job to him no interest outside the day to day, doesnt watch any games etc. If he's commited to it he's been around the club young lads might look up to him always seemed a very professional player no qualms for me

It's a bit strange. The website, without actually giving any contract length, gives the impression the appointment is for a longer period going forward, whilst Ross in the T&A states that it's only until the end of the season. Fwiw, I'd guess the appointment would be a 'change of terms' until the end of his current deal which ends at the end of next season.

I'm happy. He's a good player and has much to offer. Assuming he can communicate with the youngsters I can see little but good.

That was my initial thought. He's contracted to the end of next season. So we either pay him off, or we keep paying him to do something purposeful. Seems like a good decision to keep him and use his experience

I always thought if a player retired through injury then the player insurance paid the remainder of their contract?.

If so, I guess, on the basis that if his wages are covered by insurance, then it's not a case of 'paying him anyway' and they really do feel he's a top guy to be a coach, then that's actually an even better appointment than we thought.
