Lee Smith : Fri Jun 19, 2009 9:28 am
Smith to leave Rhinos at end of 2009

Lee Smith is leaving the Rhinos at the end of this seson to "try a new challenge" I'd love to see him at Odsal, very useful player but reading that release it sounds like someone who is off to Union IMO. Which would be a shame.

Do you agree he is he someone we could use and should be making enquiries? But do you also agree that he's probably not coming to Odsal and might end up playing Union as it sounds like he already has a done deal in place?

#edit# just seen this;

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_league/super_league/leeds/8108796.stm

So he is expected to switch codes, oh well - not much to discuss then sorry, feel free to let this slip off the front page as unuseful info only :)

The "try a new challenge" at the age of 22 sounds like the challenge is to spend all the money he's been promised. Nobody at that age is going to leave a winning club without having something in place already and while Leeds might have a fairly rigid pay structure in place I can't see them having offered him peanuts.

He will be going to Union and, anyway coming a few miles up the road wouldn't really be a big challenge would it?

I do think he would be a good signing generally, but since fullback is clearly his best position, do we really want to spend money on another fullback when we already have 2 (regardless of how you rate those 2) under contract?

If we didn't have Platt or had lost Halley, I would have said sign him up.

If Semi ends up leaving and we don't get a decent replacement in, then he could be an option for the vacant wing position, but I don't think it'll be worth the money he'd want.

Maybe he'll do as well as Karl Pryce or Chris Ashton..
Average squad player at best, has a good 2 weeks last season.

Whilst I do think he is a good player, good turn of pace and knows where the try line is, I can't help but think his success comes from the players around him. So he will need to pick the right team or he could be coming back to SL pretty quickly - perhaps one to monitor

I don't think he's half as good as he think he is though

Every player in our squad could probably earn more money with another club. But they prefer to sacrifice a few extra quid in their back pocket to share special memories. And playing at a place like Old Trafford on a night like this makes it all worthwhile.

Bitter much? He had a decent night last october.

He's a quality outside back and I wish he was staying in RL, even if not with us. He and Briscoe could have a real ding dong battle for the England full back jersey for the next 7 years and he'd do a really good job on the wing. He's unfortunate to be behind Webb at the Rhinos.

Sadly, I suspect the worst kept secret will be confirmed and he'll end up at Wasps RU.
