Their disaster against Wakey is surely a great example of how a very high proportion of RL is played inside the head. Yes Wakey were good and as confidence oozed they got better. yes Wigan were poor and as confidence drained they got worse. But the parallel with us is that no way is the team that was on the field 60 points worse than Wakefield, so something else went on. Here is the Wigan team that played: Wigan: Sarginson; Tierney, Higginson, Gildart, Charnley; Gregson, Smith; Clubb, Powell, Mossop, J Tomkins, Isa, Sutton. Replacements: Tautai, Burke, Bretherton, Wells. Interesting story generated by the game: How do teams develop confidence in adversity? If you were given a full choice, how many of those players would you immediately put into the Bulls' first team squad?

Out of that starting 13 there are 10 experienced SL players + Tierney who was identified by the graceless Wane as starting FB this year. 2 of the subs are SL players also. WIgan have not played well this year, despite managing to win. They had enough available to compete, even win. Same with Leeds in every game this season. When teams are evenly matched ability wise it is nearly all down to the mental side. In a whupping like that it is all mental. Wane has done well with a squad of largely average players for the last few years. Only 2 or 3 of them would I want in the Cas side. He has created a victim mentality & managed to couple that aggression with Maguire's gameplan. Unfortunately for him he doesn't have the intelligence or talent to adjust either.

Wakefield are becoming a good side against expectations. Thus when Wakefield now play well they really play well. This meant that Wigan who didn't play well on the day despite having a team on the pitch that Wakefield couln't even afford got hammered. It happens in TEAM sports where the sum is greater than the parts.

Why would you say this is happening now & not under Smith?

They simply weren't enjoying life under Smith's regime. He had them training at Featherstone for a start. Chester's from Wakefield so brings a bit of pride and passion to the place.

Its even simpler than that..The word being negativity and one to remember as the season unfolds.To counteract negativity you have to create a positive.Wakey are an excellent example of both.Get shut of Webster and bring Smith in who builds virtually a new squad,removing the negativity and creating a positive.Saves them relegation.New season, negativity is back and Smith gets caught up with it.Enter Chester with a positive to counteract the negative.

Only a matter of time before the negativity arrives back..They're not 3rd favourites for the middle 8's for nothing.

That's true about Wakey but Wigan could be in the mix if they're not careful. They can barely score. They know how to win, but it's all based on defence. Another result even slightly close to the one at the weekend and that's all thrown away. If the league stays as tight as it is that's them in 8th or 9th, teetering.
