when you study those figures its pretty interesting, the 2000 window has three teams all with more than 100 wins, which indicates a big gulf between the top and bottom sides compared to the 1980 window where no team got over 100, vbfg can you give us the points difference table for the corresponding years as that would confirm my hypothesis.

When my club didn't exist it was still bigger than yours

Exactly my plan. I just need a small time window of my own. An idea of number of wins needed to finish top over the years will give a clue too.

edit: Potential explanation, but maybe not the whole story, is the different sizes and structures of leagues over those years. This is a count of all games that count towards the title, so as of '98 finals series are included here. Prior to that it's normal league games only. I considered including Premiership games or throwing away finals series but rejected it suspecting it would not work in our favour.

Four point tries. 1982, right?

I threw away the finals series and just went with final tables for easier comparison. I split the tables up into groups of four starting from the top. So there's a top four, a top middle, a bottom middle and then the rest. Sometimes the rest is four, mostly it's two. Screw it.

Points difference by group across the years:

Image

And, just a bit of fun boys and girls, here's points difference by grouping for home games only:

Image

and same again for away games:

Image

I think they speak for themselves. :)

Our groupings have battered teams home and away, and then lost more heavily than anyone else has done before. We are a bigger club than all the others.

We really brought a touch of class to that bottom middle group. Our falling standards have raised standards across the board.

Just to give an idea of how much overlap between the groups there is:

Nice one vbfg. something for everyone in those charts. Yes we are much bigger than Wigan as they couldnt even get relegated unlike us. more wins more trophies more financial crises, more trolls, more arrogant posters, more posters that can only remember a golden age, we are the champions...

...hip favourites!

The improvement in bottom middle the last few seasons is quite marked, as is the worsening of the bottom to rock bottom. It does illustrate that the top 12 teams have got closer competitively and drawn away from the bottom teams, and most of all that it will not be that easy to get into the top 4 of the super 8s despite the format making the games more like cup games. On the other hand should we (or other championship side) actually get promoted then we will have deserved it.

That bottom middle group is "quite interesting". It's most noticeable in the middle image representing home games that from the middle 90's, essentially the start of summer rugby, their relative performances against (one presumes) the upper echelons of the table really fall away. You can see it in the bottom group too. Prior to that teams seemed reasonably competitive at home, rarely averaging out to a negative score. But then a gulf opens up and it's only starting to close now. I'm a little curious to see if that's the result of one or two kickings skewing the results or if it's a general lack of competitiveness.

Longest runs for wins, losses and draws for each season. Completely fortuitously I don't have all the 2014 data of the right type, and whilst I can get it it does feel like something best left to the imagination.
