To me, Wigan's problems are all based around their halves. Matty Smith, as has been said, is fine when everything's going right. But when it's not, he never steps up and helps the team get out of the rut. George Williams looks a good prospect, but is still young and learning, and has been injured anyway.
They're badly missing McIlorum. While he's a bit of a grubby player, a lot of the best hookers are. And when he's not there, it's more pressure on the likes of Smith.
That's not even mentioning that Wigan have been used to having a top quality attacking fullback for years now, and until Mr Tomkins is fit again, they're missing that too.
I would expect with Tomkins & McIlorum fit, Wigan would be a different side completely. But I still think if they want to truly dominate, they need better quality than Matty Smith.
