It always amazes me how people have an idea in their head that if you charge £X instead of £Y, then you won't lose money, and enough people will come. This being based on absolutely nothing, just one person's idle speculation.
OTOH hard experience shows that those who want to come will come and those who weren't going to will not be swayed by a fiver off. The dividing line between it being a worthwhile use of your time is never as fine as that. Experience shows that even if the event costs buttons, or even is free, this is not enough to get people to come. It doesn't make an event any more attractive.
Looking specifically at our case, a home tie with say Whitehaven will find plenty of vacant seats around me. And those are people who had ALREADY PAID, and STILL don't find the event attractive enough. So the balance between price and attractiveness is almost totally slanted in favour of attractiveness.
