Need to add his groundsman service on there too...

Not sure if you have the stats handy, but it got me thinking about the three quarter line of the early 90s in the old Stones Bitter Championship. Who had the best try scoring strike rate? It'd be Newlove a long way clear. Then in my hazy memory I'd guess Steve McGowan > Gerry Cordle > Dave Watson > Roger Simpson > Tony Marchant. Can't remember Darrell Shelford that much for some reason.

I bloody loved Roger Simpson. My favourite player when I was but a young un and first starting to understand what was going on.

Depends on which seasons you pick. In total appearances Newlove's strike rate is the best - 66 Tries in 67 (+3) appearances. That in 2 and a third seasons as well as he left part way through the 95/96 season and was "injured" for some of that period when he was sorting our his move.

Gerry Cordle has the next best ratio - 121 (+1) appearances. 77 tries.

Which Bradford Northern back made 240 (+12) appearances scoring 105 tries and 6 goals? He had 12 seasons with the club and played a spell for North Sydney Bears when they were in the ARL.

I remember Brimah Kebbie from that period. A very fast and elusive winger who scored some great long range scores.

Yeah he was great outside Newlove, had some proper speed.

37 Appearances and 25 tries. Not a bad return that.

That's who I thought too. The reason for the fairly cryptic 'got a benefit in other ways' was just that he did get a job as groundsman - though that said, in the old part-time days it's probable he already had the job when he was playing and, of course, it would have been a job from the council in those days, not the club. I'll scrub the 'benefit in other ways'....
